Replacing your laptop battery: what to do if it malfunctions

Replacing a laptop battery is a common task, but it doesn’t always go to plan. Sometimes, technical issues appear as soon as you install the new battery. Here is a guide to the most common problems and the simple solutions you can try.

The laptop won’t turn on with the new battery

A new battery is often empty when delivered

It’s quite normal to receive a completely discharged battery for safety reasons. If your laptop doesn’t respond after you insert the new battery, don’t panic straight away.

First, plug in the mains charger for a few minutes. The power will start the battery charging, and the laptop should then power on as normal.

The battery doesn’t seem to charge

A charging issue at the first connection

During the first charge, the following can happen:

  • The battery indicator jumps from 0 to 100% in a few seconds
  • Or the laptop refuses to charge the battery

This behaviour is quite common during the initial synchronisation between the battery and the system. To fix it:

  1. Shut the laptop down
  2. Remove the battery
  3. Wait for one to two minutes
  4. Refit the battery and plug the power supply back in

This process often resets the charging detection.

The battery doesn’t appear in the system

Automatic detection is not always instant

If the battery doesn’t show up in your settings, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s faulty. Sometimes, the system needs a few minutes to detect it, especially if it has never worked with this model before.

Two possible solutions:

  • Wait a few minutes after fitting the battery
  • Go to the system settings and then to the device manager to force detection

By updating the power-related drivers, you help the laptop recognise the battery correctly.

The battery is incompatible

An error message may indicate a compatibility problem

If all your attempts fail, the cause may be an incompatibility between your laptop and the battery you’ve installed.

Some laptops are configured to reject non-certified batteries, even if the connector looks identical. Other differences can also cause issues:

  • Incorrect voltage (V)
  • Unsuitable capacity (mAh)
  • A slightly different connector design

Check the exact reference of your laptop and compare it with the one printed on the battery.

What if nothing works?

If, despite all your attempts, the battery still doesn’t work:

Contact your laptop manufacturer to check the compatibility specifications
Also get in touch with the battery seller, especially if it is still under warranty

In some cases, a return or a like-for-like exchange will be offered.
