How to replace the battery in your Lenovo laptop

The lifespan of your Lenovo laptop battery is limited. As the years and usage go by, the time will come when it no longer holds a charge. Your battery will then lose its usefulness. When that day comes, don’t panic. Get yourself a powerful, compatible replacement battery for your laptop and the problem will be solved.

When should you replace the battery in your Lenovo laptop?

Heavy use of your laptop is what causes the rapid wear of its battery. Using power-hungry software and features such as video games and your Internet connection also contributes to this.

Every time the battery is empty, we all tend to plug it in straight away so we can keep using the laptop. Unfortunately, this habit is not without consequences. A battery’s lifespan and battery life decrease as it is repeatedly discharged and recharged.

The battery in a Lenovo laptop will generally start to weaken after around 18 to 24 months of use. Its charge will drop from 100% to 0% in under 2 hours. This is unavoidable, even if you only use it for basic office tasks. When the loss of capacity becomes more severe, your laptop will only start when it is plugged into the mains.

In general, the battery in a Lenovo laptop is designed for around 3,000 charge cycles. Once this number is reached, the battery becomes unusable. As a reminder, one cycle is equivalent to a full charge from 0 to 100% (4 successive 25% charges therefore make up one cycle).

The battery in Lenovo laptops can also be rendered unusable independently of its built‑in lifespan. This can happen if it has been damaged by a power surge, overheating or a short circuit.

How to find a compatible battery for your Lenovo laptop

Remove the battery from your laptop. This is a fairly simple job that even someone with no experience can manage. Here are the steps to follow.

Step 1

Save any work in progress. Shut down the laptop, then unplug it. Place it on a clear, flat table.

Step 2

Remove the old battery. On older models such as the G50-30, the battery is removable and held in place by clips. To remove it, simply turn the laptop over and slide it out of its bay while pushing the clips aside. Note down the information you need to find a battery with the same technical specifications: model, capacity, power, voltage.

On more recent models such as the Lenovo Yoga C940, the battery is located inside. To remove it, you must undo all the screws on the bottom cover. Remember where each screw belongs so you don’t miss any when refitting.

Next, open the laptop as if you were going to use it. Remove the keyboard, using a rigid plastic card as a lever. You will need to remove more screws to be able to detach the bottom cover. Once the bottom cover is off, you will have access to the battery, which is located on the screen side. Disconnect it and read the information you need to find a compatible model.
