A recall procedure relaunched after new incidents

In August 2015, the brand Fujitsu announced a global recall campaign covering several batteries used in its professional laptop ranges. The aim was to prevent risks linked to potential overheating, which in some cases could cause a fire to start. The recall applied to certain laptop references, but also to batteries bought separately or replaced under after‑sales service.

At the beginning of February, this recall campaign was reactivated following a reported fire incident in Canada, prompting the brand to tighten its precautionary measures.

New models included in the campaign

This second recall is not limited to the references previously identified. It covers both models already listed in 2015 and new series recently identified as at risk. The affected laptops are:

  • Celsius H720

  • Lifebook A512, E752, E733, E743, E753

  • Lifebook P702, P772

  • Lifebook S710, S752, S762

  • Lifebook T732, T734, T902

If you own one of these models, it is essential to check whether the installed battery matches the references listed in the recall notice.

Identifying the batteries that must be replaced

How to spot an affected battery

The brand recommends comparing the product number (P/N) and the serial number with those given in the official list. If they match, you must stop using the battery immediately and have it replaced.

    Active communication with users

Since September 2018, online sales platforms have been directly notifying customers who ordered a potentially defective battery. If you have received such a message, you are advised to check your battery’s reference. If in doubt, the replacement procedure is completely free of charge, provided the battery is indeed affected.

Why do these batteries pose a real danger?

Lithium‑ion batteries used in modern laptops are very efficient but require rigorous manufacturing. A defect in the production process can lead to thermal instability, or even a short circuit that can cause a fire that is difficult to bring under control. This type of fire is hard to extinguish because of the chemical reactions of lithium. In addition to a manufacturing defect, poor ventilation or repeated impacts can increase the risks.

It is therefore crucial to never ignore a manufacturer’s recall, even if no symptoms have appeared yet.

What about the batteries currently on sale?

Authorised distributors ensure they only offer Fujitsu batteries that fully comply with the new standards. These batteries are free from any identified risk, allowing customers to order with complete confidence. Users can therefore replace their battery without compromising the safety of their equipment.
