Manufacturers will simply stop producing SATA‑based M.2 SSDs, whose maximum data transfer rate is 6 Gbps and therefore considered slow. All new M.2 SSDs will now be NVMe SSDs.

SATA has long been the main connection interface used as storage technology. SATA hard drives need two cables to work. One is used to transfer data to the motherboard and the other to power the unit from the power supply. As with iPad batteries and Mac tablet chargers, technology is evolving. Cable clutter was one of the problems affecting PC performance when using several SATA storage drives. Slim laptops (including ultrabooks) do not even have room for these cables, which is why they use the M.2 form factor that does not need two separate cables and has solved this problem.

However, the fact that it is an M.2 SSD does not change the fact that it is a SATA SSD. The main differences between M.2 SATA and NVMe SSDs lie in the interface technology and performance levels.

M.2 NVMe SSD

An M.2 SSD with only the M key is an NVMe SSD. M.2 NVMe SSDs use the NVMe protocol, designed specifically for SSDs. Combined with the PCIe bus, an NVMe SSD delivers the highest levels of performance and speed that can be achieved. NVMe SSDs communicate directly with the system CPU using PCIe connectors. Essentially, they allow Flash memory to operate directly as an SSD via the PCIe connectors, rather than having to use the SATA communication controller, which is much slower than NVMe.

M.2 NVMe SSDs are much more performance‑oriented than M.2 SATA SSDs. By relying on the PCIe bus, M.2 NVMe SSDs have theoretical transfer speeds of up to 20 Gbps, which is significantly faster than M.2 SATA SSDs, which go up to 6 Gbps. PCIe buses support 1, 4, 8 and 16 lanes. PCIe 3.0 has an effective transfer rate of up to 985 MB/s per lane, implying a potential transfer speed of up to 16 GB/s. However, when the M.2 form factor is used with the PCIe bus, only 2 and 4 lanes are available, resulting in a maximum transfer rate of 4 GB/s.

Is NVMe technology faster than SATA technology?

Technically, yes. Modern motherboards use SATA III, which reaches a maximum throughput of 600 MB/s, whereas NVMe drives reach speeds of up to 3,500 MB/s. The performance level is far better than SATA SSDs, whatever the form factor. Only SSDs using NVMe technology exceed the transfer rate limits that restrict the performance of SATA‑based SSDs.

To choose between M.2 SATA or NVMe SSDs, here are some points to consider:

NVMe SSD

System compatibility

Older devices may not support NVMe, as they do not have the required connections to use NVMe PCIe connectors.

Fast boot

The easiest way to speed up your computer’s start‑up is to install the operating system on an SSD. With an NVMe SSD, you will benefit from an impressive speed boost.

Storage priority

You can use an NVMe SSD in combination with other SATA SSDs. This is an affordable option without breaking the bank. You can install the operating system and resource‑hungry programmes and applications on the NVMe SSD, and use the SATA SSD to store everything else, such as smaller files, documents, etc. that use fewer resources.

Gaming benefits

With an M.2 NVMe SSD, you will notice a dramatic improvement in game loading times. Games installed on NVMe drives benefit from much better overall transfer speed performance when loading game data from storage.

PCIe generations

There are generations of PCIe buses that offer different performance levels. Bandwidth doubles from one generation to the next, and some SSDs use different PCIe generations. The latest is PCIe 4.0, while PCIe 5.0 is still under development.

Shared connections

Some motherboards do not have enough PCIe connections to support several NVMe drives. You may have to choose whether to use the available connection with a graphics card or an NVMe SSD. At other times, more PCIe lanes may be available, but only certain connection types will be able to use NVMe devices at full speed, such as an M.2 connection.

SATA M.2 SSD Recently, more SATA M.2 SSDs will no longer be delivered.
