We go online to search for information, shop, do our banking, homework, play games and stay in touch with family and friends through social media. As a result, our devices hold a wealth of personal information about us. This might be bank or financial details, or even medical information – all information we want to keep safe. If your devices are not protected, identity thieves and other fraudsters can gain access and steal your personal data. Spammers could use your computer as a « zombie drone » to send junk emails that appear to come from you. Malicious viruses or spyware could be dropped onto your computer, slowing it down or destroying files.

By using security measures and good practice to protect your devices, you can help protect your privacy and your family. The tips below are designed to help you reduce the risks when you are online.

Keep your device secure

Always download the updates recommended by your device manufacturer or operating system provider, especially for important software such as your web browser. Antivirus software, anti-spyware and firewalls are also essential tools to block attacks on your device.

Stay up to date

Regularly update your system, browser and key applications, and turn on automatic updates whenever they are available. These updates can fix software vulnerabilities that allow hackers to see what you are doing or steal information. Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft. It downloads and installs software updates for the Microsoft Windows operating system, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, and also delivers security updates. Automatic update can also be enabled for other systems such as the Macintosh operating system. For mobile devices, make sure you install Android or iPhone updates as they are automatically pushed out.

Antivirus software

Antivirus software protects your device against viruses that can destroy your data, slow down or crash your device, or allow spammers to send emails through your account. Antivirus protection scans your files and incoming emails for viruses, then removes anything malicious. You must keep your antivirus software up to date to deal with the latest bugs circulating on the internet. Most antivirus programs include a feature that automatically downloads updates when you are online. In addition, make sure the software is always running and checking your system for viruses, especially if you download files from the web or check your email. Set your antivirus software to scan for viruses every day. You should also run a full, in-depth scan of your system at least twice a month.

Anti-spyware software

Spyware is software installed without your knowledge or consent that can monitor your online activity and collect personal information when you are on the internet. Some types of spyware, called keyloggers, record everything you type, including your passwords and financial information. Signs that your device may be infected with spyware include pop-up adverts suddenly appearing, being taken to websites you did not intend to visit, and a general slowdown in performance. Spyware protection is included in some antivirus software. Check your antivirus documentation to find out how to enable spyware protection features. You can also buy separate anti-spyware software. Keep your anti-spyware program up to date and run it regularly. To avoid spyware, only download software from sites you know and trust. Make sure the apps you install on a mobile device come from the Apple App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android devices.

Firewalls

A firewall is software or a piece of hardware that stops hackers breaking into and using your computer. Hackers scan the internet in much the same way as some telesales systems automatically dial random phone numbers. They send pings (calls) to thousands of computers and wait for replies. Firewalls stop your computer from responding to these random calls. A firewall blocks communications to and from sources you have not authorised. This is particularly important if you have a high-speed internet connection such as ADSL or cable. Some operating systems include built-in firewalls that may be shipped in « off » mode.

Make sure your firewall is turned on

To be effective, your firewall must be configured correctly and updated regularly. Check your online help function for specific instructions.

Use strong protection

Using complex passwords and strong authentication methods can help keep your personal information secure.

Choose strong passwords

Protect your devices and accounts from intruders by choosing passwords that are hard to guess. Use strong passwords with at least eight characters, combining letters, numbers and special characters.

Protect yourself and your devices Today we use internet-connected devices in every part of our lives.
