Both its components and its features have gone through major changes.

More powerful and more intelligent than ever, it raises a question: what will the ideal laptop of the future actually look like?

How have laptops evolved over time?

Computers started out with bulky CRT screens. The tower unit also took up a significant amount of space. Laptops were then invented to make them easier to move around.

Laptop components have become slimmer over the years, giving rise to the models that users now prefer. The laptop now has a thin, lightweight, compact screen. It no longer needs a separate tower, and the keyboard is built in.

In recent years, touchscreens have also arrived. A laptop can now be operated directly, without always having to use the keyboard and mouse.

These devices are available in ever smaller sizes and weigh less and less. Some laptops are under 8 inches and weigh no more than 2 kg.

What changes can we expect from the computer of the future?

The developments planned for computers of the future are being designed to meet users’ needs. Easier to use, more automation, more intelligence… researchers continue to explore potential improvements.

Technologies shown in science fiction could also serve as inspiration for manufacturers. But whatever changes are made, the PC must always remain practical and high‑performing. It is, after all, used mainly for professional purposes.

So can we dream of a laptop with a very large screen? With advanced voice and facial recognition? Different aspects of the laptop could evolve.

A more advanced design

To make it easier to carry, the laptop has become increasingly thin. After touch and foldable laptops, further design evolution is not obvious. However, brands’ creativity and constant technology monitoring should not be underestimated.

To optimise the workspace, screen bezels could become thinner and thinner. An additional device used as an image magnifier could also complement the laptop of the future.

Making data synchronisation simpler

Syncing data is still time‑consuming for users who work across several devices. Updating the information stored on different devices, tablets and laptops is not always automatic.

Creating a mini tower unit could be one possible solution. This would act as a mini PC connected to the keyboard and make data synchronisation easier.

The evolution of connectivity

Just like tablets and smartphones, the laptop of the future could benefit from better connectivity. Network access could be switched on whether the laptop is powered up or turned off. Users could, for example, receive email notifications even when their computer is packed away in a bag.

An integrated SIM card could make constant network access possible. Although this is still a challenging project to deliver, ongoing research could lead to this kind of development. Engineers at major brands such as Dell, HP and Lenovo could already be working on it.

Changing interfaces

Bear in mind that 20 years ago, the devices we use today were considered unlikely. So we can imagine all kinds of improvements to the interfaces of today’s laptops.

New types of interaction could appear between the user and their laptop. In addition to the keyboard and mouse, other ways of communicating, such as voice control, could be further developed.

What will the laptop of the future look like?
