In this guide you\u2019ll find the steps to share<\/strong> your mobile<\/strong> internet connection with your PC<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What you need to do first\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

First, make sure you have enough mobile data<\/strong>. Start by checking the internet allowance<\/strong> on your smartphone<\/strong>. To do this, use the dial-in code provided by your network<\/strong> operator. You can also check your allowance in the app supplied by your provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Very important<\/strong>: your phone must be properly charged<\/strong> to avoid any interruption to your work. If possible, keep your mobile<\/strong> plugged in<\/strong> to a mains power<\/strong> socket the whole time. It\u2019s true that newer phone batteries<\/strong> no longer suffer from the memory effect, but using tethering<\/strong> too often can still reduce their overall lifespan<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be aware that the quality of the connection<\/strong> depends on the quality of the network<\/strong>, your operator<\/strong> and your device<\/strong> model<\/strong>. The same applies to how many devices you can share your connection with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enabling tethering on your smartphone<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tethering (mobile hotspot) means creating a Wi-Fi access point<\/strong> that a laptop PC<\/strong> or another smartphone<\/strong> can connect to. You can also create access points via Bluetooth<\/strong> or by using USB<\/strong> modem mode<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tethering with an Android smartphone\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For all smartphones running Android<\/strong>, tethering is enabled in almost the same way. However, USB tethering is not available on some phone models.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Switch on mobile data<\/strong> on your smartphone.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Tap Settings<\/strong>, then go to Network<\/strong> and Internet<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Open \u201cHotspot & tethering<\/strong>\u201d, then \u201cWi\u2011Fi hotspot<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Next, go to \u201cSet up Wi\u2011Fi hotspot<\/strong>\u201d, then enter the network<\/strong> name (by default this is usually the phone model name). Set the security level to WPA2 PSK<\/strong> (this is recommended). Tap \u201cShow password<\/strong>\u201d because you\u2019ll need to copy it onto your PC<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Then turn on the hotspot<\/strong> whenever you need it. You\u2019ll see the phone\u2019s network listed among the available Wi\u2011Fi<\/strong> networks on your computer<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Connect by entering the password<\/strong> for the phone\u2019s hotspot<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Tethering with an iPhone\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The steps to share your connection with an iPhone<\/strong> are roughly the same as on an Android phone. The names of the menus are just slightly different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    • First open the Settings<\/strong> menu, then tap Mobile Data<\/strong> and Personal Hotspot<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Enable the slider labelled \u201cAllow Others to Join<\/strong>\u201d. But before that, you should create<\/strong> or change<\/strong> the Wi\u2011Fi password.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • When the iPhone\u2019s Wi\u2011Fi hotspot<\/strong> appears on the PC<\/strong>, connect by entering the password<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Some tips for managing tethering effectively<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      To save<\/strong> your mobile data<\/strong>, switch off tethering<\/strong> whenever you don\u2019t need an active connection<\/strong> on your computer<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Set up<\/strong> tethering so that it turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity. To do this: in \u201cWi\u2011Fi hotspot<\/strong>\u201d, tap \u201cKeep Wi\u2011Fi hotspot on<\/strong>\u201d, then select \u201cTurn off when inactive for \u2026 mins<\/strong>\u201d (choose the time that suits you).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
