Many of us are in the habit of drinking a hot drink<\/strong> in front of our laptop<\/strong> while working. Then, in a brief moment of inattention, the liquid spills onto the keyboard<\/strong>. An accident like this can be fatal<\/strong> for your device<\/strong>. What should you do if this happens to you? Here is our advice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unplug the laptop and remove the battery <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Without hesitating for a second, unplug the laptop<\/strong> if it is connected to the mains. Then remove the battery<\/strong> immediately. If the battery is not removable, you will need to open the laptop<\/strong>. This quick reaction will help you protect<\/strong> the key components of your machine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turn the laptop upside down <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Carefully turn your laptop<\/strong> over (keyboard facing down) so you can drain<\/strong> as much liquid as possible. Be careful: avoid shaking<\/strong> it or banging<\/strong> it. If it is a desktop computer keyboard, only turn the keyboard over<\/strong>. This step is important even if only a small amount of liquid seems to come out of the device<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you have already opened a laptop<\/strong> before, or if you feel confident you can manage it, continue with the process. Otherwise, ask a repair<\/strong> service for help. Open and take the laptop apart, then dry the components<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Opening the laptop is essential<\/strong> so you can remove any parts<\/strong> that have come into contact with the liquid. Disconnect and take them out<\/strong>. Start with the most sensitive components such as the SSD<\/strong>, the graphics card<\/strong>, etc.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dry<\/strong> each component with a soft<\/strong>, absorbent cloth<\/strong>. Avoid rough fabrics that could damage your laptop\u2019s components. You can use a hairdryer<\/strong>. Make sure you set it to the \u201ccold<\/strong>\u201d setting or the lowest heat<\/strong> and a slow speed<\/strong>. Do not hold the hairdryer too close to the components. If the liquid is sticky, dampen your cloth with a little water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let it dry and reassemble <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Once everything has been wiped<\/strong> down, leave the device<\/strong> to dry in the open air<\/strong> for several hours. Ideally, place everything on a clear<\/strong>, clean table<\/strong>. Make sure you keep all the screws safe. When everything is completely dry, reassemble your device<\/strong>, close it up<\/strong>, then switch it back on<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

If everything works properly, you are in the clear. If the laptop is not working correctly or will not turn on at all, contact a repair technician<\/strong>; an important component may be damaged<\/strong>. The motherboard<\/strong> is the part most likely to be affected<\/strong>.
