Top 5 most purchased laptops for long battery life

In recent years, we’ve clearly seen laptops take over from desktop machines. They have become very popular thanks to their compact format, great mobility and the ease of getting a powerful configuration at a more affordable price compared with fixed systems.

However, after a few years of use, a laptop battery starts to show signs of fatigue, which pushes users to treat their device like a “desktop PC” or to constantly hunt for a mains socket to recharge.

Battery life is a crucial buying criterion, coming right after raw performance. Most users expect their battery to last long enough to cover at least 8 hours of work. This runtime depends on several factors, including the physical capacity of the battery, the workload demanded of the system and the laptop’s own power consumption.

The good news is that the market offers laptops that meet and even exceed this expectation. Our league table highlights these standout models. To stay as objective as possible, we based our ranking on two types of tests: those that push the battery to its limit and those that simulate power‑saving conditions.

Power‑saving tests are considered the most reliable for comparison because they are carried out in standardised conditions: full battery, Wi‑Fi off, aeroplane mode on, screen brightness at 50% and background apps disabled. Only the playback of local video content draws power.

Top 5 laptops with the most impressive battery life

MacBook Air 2020

Whether you are a Mac (iOS) ecosystem user or not, you have to admit that Apple laptops are consistently ranked among the best for battery life. Native apps are specifically developed to reduce power consumption, which helps the battery last longer.

The MacBook Air 2020 comes with a 49.9 Wh (4379 mAh) lithium‑polymer battery. The manufacturer claims a theoretical battery life of around 11 hours.

Because runtime is directly linked to workload, web browsing, media use and gaming all tax the battery differently. In maximum load tests, the machine lasts around 8 hours.

The results of the so‑called “power‑saving” tests are outstanding: the battery reaches 29 hours. That’s enough for continuous film or series viewing over an entire weekend without needing to recharge. This record is explained by Apple’s optimisation, which ensures very low power consumption from the processor during video playback.

Asus ExpertBook B9450

The ExpertBook B9450 is fitted with a 66 Wh (4280 mAh) battery. This Asus laptop is also notable for its clean design, light weight and comfortable user experience, making it an excellent choice for working on the move.

In heavy‑use tests, the battery lasts between 9 and 10 hours.

Against Apple, Asus positions itself as a serious rival: the ExpertBook B9450 manages around 28 hours of video playback in power‑saving mode. The choice between these two champions will mainly come down to your preferred operating system (Windows or iOS).

Dell Inspiron 14 7000

The Dell Inspiron 14 7000 uses a 4‑cell 52 Wh (6840 mAh) battery, with a manufacturer estimate of 8 to 9 hours. Independent tests place it just behind the MacBook.

Under heavy load, battery life is around 7 to 8 hours, which provides solid coverage for the working day. In minimum‑load tests, the battery reaches 21 hours, which is more than enough for unplugged multimedia use.

Dell Latitude 9510

This model is available with two distinct battery configurations: a 4‑cell (52 Wh) and a 6‑cell (88 Wh). The two are not interchangeable. The Latitude 9510 is often cited for its extremely long battery life.

In maximum‑use scenarios (browsing, video calls, streaming), tests record around 14 hours.

In the “light use” battery test, the laptop reaches 24 hours, which is very impressive. It’s worth noting that these figures come from tests of the more powerful 6‑cell battery. It’s reasonable to expect the 4‑cell version to be closer to the Inspiron 14 7000. The two Dell machines therefore share third place.

HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7

After being less visible on the market for a while, HP is back with some strong performers. The EliteBook x360 is equipped with a 54 Wh (7012 mAh) battery. It can last around 17 hours under heavy use. In favourable conditions, it reaches about 20 hours.

As mentioned earlier, standardised tests are the best indicator of real‑world battery life. Despite its excellent runtime, the HP EliteBook x360 comes in at the bottom of this list.

Key points for choosing the right laptop

Your final choice depends on a careful look at your daily routine. If your life means constant movement, travel and a permanent need to stay connected, any of the models listed will be an excellent investment.

On the other hand, if your work is mainly desk‑based or you have easy access to power sockets, a more affordable option with shorter battery life may well be enough. The choice is purely about what you need the laptop to do.
