Replace your HP Omen 15-AX battery yourself: an easy step‑by‑step guide

If the battery life of your precious HP Omen 15-AX is not what it used to be, it’s time to take action! You’re ready to tackle a repair project, and that’s an excellent decision. Replacing the battery is a simple maintenance task that doesn’t require you to be an electronics expert.

This tutorial is your essential ally: it will walk you through each step, giving you all the details you need so the replacement is carried out safely.

Please note: your laptop requires battery reference TE04XL. Check that the replacement part you’ve ordered matches this reference before you start.

Preparation – the key to a successful replacement

Good preparation is essential to avoid any issues. Take the time to get organised so the job can be done calmly.

1. What you’ll need: checklist of tools

To complete this project, make sure you’ve gathered the following items:

  • The new battery (reference TE04XL).
  • A precision screwdriver set (for handling the small screws).
  • Plastic opening tools: a guitar pick, an old bank card, or a special prying tool (spudger). Be careful – never use sharp metal tools as they can damage the plastic parts or components.
  • A clean, spacious, non‑static workspace (a wooden surface is ideal).

2. Precautions before taking it apart

These steps ensure your safety and that of your machine:

  • Shut your laptop down completely: use the Shut down option in the Start menu. Don’t rely on sleep or hibernation.
  • Unplug the power supply: make sure the laptop is no longer connected to the charger at all.
  • Remove all cables and accessories: disconnect the mouse, USB sticks, video cables, etc.
  • Discharge static electricity: touch a grounded metal object (a radiator or tap) just before you begin to discharge any static electricity from your body. This is the best protection for your motherboard.

Starting the job: opening the case

Now it’s time to get to work. Always proceed gently and carefully.

1. Removing the screws from the back cover

Carefully place your HP Omen 15-AX upside down. You’ll see the fixing points for the bottom panel.

  • Use the correct screwdriver to remove all the screws one by one.
  • Organisation tip: to make reassembly easier, place the screws on a sheet of paper or a magnetic tray and note their exact location, as they may be different lengths.
  • Keep the screws in a safe place.

2. Gently removing the protection panel

This is often the trickiest step. The panel is held in place by plastic clips as well as screws.

  • Insert your plastic opening tool into the gap in the casing, starting from a corner.
  • Slide it along the edges with light pressure to release the clips. You’ll hear soft clicks.
  • Never force it. If it won’t budge, check that you haven’t missed a screw.
  • Once all the clips are released, lift off and set the back cover aside.

Removing the old battery and installing the new one

You now have a clear view of the inside of your machine, including the part to be replaced.

1. How to remove the old battery

The battery is clearly the largest component inside and is held in place by a few screws.

  • Locate the TE04XL battery.
  • The most delicate step is unplugging it: find the ribbon (the small cable) that connects it to the motherboard and gently pull on the connector (the plastic part), taking care not to damage the wires.
  • Then remove the screws that secure the old battery to the chassis.
  • Remove the worn‑out battery pack.

2. Fitting the new battery

  • Place the new TE04XL battery in its slot.
  • Secure it with the retaining screws.
  • Reconnect the new battery’s ribbon cable to the motherboard. Gently push the connector in until it is firm and properly aligned.

The final, crucial step: closing up and testing

1. Refitting the back cover

  • Put the cover back in place, making sure the edges are properly aligned.
  • Press lightly around the edge so that the locking clips snap back into place.
  • Screw back in all the screws you set aside earlier.

2. First start‑up and first charge

  • Plug the laptop in.
  • Switch it on.
  • Let the battery charge fully (to 100%) without using it on battery power the first time. This initial charge is important to “calibrate” the new battery life.
