Lenovo IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1 review: performance and flexibility at a competitive price

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1 stands out as an affordable option in the convertible laptop segment. Priced at around 880 euros, it combines practical features, good battery life and on-the-go use, but does come with a few limitations in multimedia and performance.

Functional, ergonomic design

With its square design and anthracite grey metal chassis, the IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1 offers a sturdy build and a weight of 1.49 kg, making it easy to carry around. The rotating hinge allows for a quick conversion into a tablet, and the removable battery ensures continuous use during charging. However, the port layout, including the microUSB, may feel a little dated compared with current standards.

Responsive keyboard and full connectivity

The keyboard on the IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1 is designed to offer a comfortable typing experience, with suitable key spacing and a precise key travel. However, the plastic touchpad lacks responsiveness compared with more modern glass surfaces. In terms of connectivity, the laptop stands out thanks to two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 output and a microSD card reader, a more than satisfactory setup for a device at this price.

Display: high image quality but limited outdoors

The 14-inch OLED display (1920×1200 resolution) impresses with its colour reproduction (99.6% DCI-P3) and perfect calibration. However, the brightness is on the low side, with 368 cd/m² making it difficult to use outdoors. The glossy finish emphasises this limitation, but for indoor use the screen offers pleasing image quality and a 16:10 aspect ratio that is optimised for multitasking.

Performance and battery life: a balance of efficiency and limits

The Snapdragon X Plus combined with 16 GB of RAM allows the IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1 to handle office work and multimedia tasks without difficulty. Battery life can reach 18–19 hours in office use, which is well above average. However, performance in multitasking and graphics is limited compared with more high-end devices. Tests in Cinebench 2024 and Steel Nomad Light confirm this, but the scores remain good enough for light everyday use.

Audio quality and webcam: room for improvement

The 1080p webcam is nothing special, lacking dynamic range, which makes video calls feel less smooth. The speakers are also underwhelming, producing weak, slightly muffled sound. A Bluetooth headset therefore becomes essential for optimal listening.

Conclusion: a versatile but somewhat limited alternative

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5x 2-in-1 is attractive thanks to its design and versatility at a reasonable price. With its high-quality screen, impressive battery life and solid performance, it is a good choice for light day-to-day use. However, its poor audio quality and multimedia limitations remain sticking points for more demanding users.
