What to do when your smartphone falls in water

When a smartphone accidentally slips into a sink, a puddle or a swimming pool, you need to act without wasting time. Acting quickly can really limit the damage and sometimes even save the device. Here are the right steps to take.

React immediately: an absolute must

If your smartphone has fallen into water, take it out straightaway. Switch it off without delay to avoid short circuits, as moisture can cause irreversible damage. Remove the case, if you use one, as well as all accessories: earphones, charging cable, memory card. The aim is to let the device breathe to make drying easier.

Carefully dry and remove what you can

Take a soft cloth or some kitchen roll to dry the entire surface of the phone. Pay particular attention to the buttons (power, volume), the jack port, the USB connector, the speakers and the microphone. A dry cotton bud lets you reach the corners. If your device allows you to remove the battery, SIM card or SD card, do so gently without forcing it. Do not use hot air, but a hairdryer on a cold setting can speed up the process.

Trap moisture with rice or silica gel

Next, place your phone in an airtight bag filled with dry rice or sachets of silica gel. These materials have very effective absorbent properties. Leave the phone to rest for 36 to 48 hours without switching it on.

Get it checked if necessary

Even if the device restarts, it may show signs of malfunction. It is advisable to have it checked so that any potentially damaged parts can be replaced.
