How to switch from iPhone to Android: complete guide

Switching from an iPhone to an Android smartphone can seem complicated. Different systems, new actions to learn, data to transfer… No need to worry. With a few tips, you can make this transition without any trouble. Here is the step-by-step guide to switch without stress.

Getting familiar with Android

Most of the apps available on iOS are also available on Android. You will find Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Spotify, Evernote, and so on. By signing back into your accounts, your data will automatically be restored via the cloud.

Android lets you move easily between apps, organise them, close them manually… Features very similar to the Apple environment. And if you prefer an iOS-style interface, you can install a launcher such as iLauncher.

Create a Google account

You need a Google account to activate your Android smartphone. You can create one with any e-mail address. This account will be used to synchronise and transfer your data.

Transfer your contacts

On Android:

  • Settings > Accounts > Google > enable contact synchronisation.

On iPhone:

  • Settings > Contacts > Accounts > add your Google account > enable synchronisation.

Another method: export your contacts via iCloud, then import them into Gmail from a computer so you can tidy them up at the same time.

Transfer your text messages

The process is a bit more technical:

  1. Back up the iPhone to a PC.
  2. Copy the file 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 to the Android device.
  3. Use iSMS2Droid to convert the text messages.
  4. Restore them with SMS Backup & Restore.

Transfer your photos and videos

Connect the iPhone to a PC. Copy the files into a temporary folder. Then connect your Android smartphone and transfer them into the DCIM folder.

On a Mac, use Android File Transfer.

Transfer your music

You have two options:

  • Copy your music files into the Music folder on the Android device.
  • Use Google Play Music to transfer your iTunes library.

You’re all set!

All your data is now available on your new Android phone. All that’s left is to enjoy using it to the full.
