How to get the battery on your ageing smartphone replaced

Malheureusement, user‑replaceable batteries are becoming increasingly rare, and most smartphone manufacturers make little effort to tell you that it is possible to get a replacement battery. In fact, when Apple briefly cut the cost of iPhone battery replacements, the number of people replacing their batteries was ten times higher than usual (and, coincidentally, far fewer new iPhones were sold that year). However, even if your battery is sealed inside your phone, you can still get a new one and extend your phone’s lifespan.

Quelques points à prendre en compte avant de remplacer la batterie

Even though battery replacements are very useful, they can also be a bit of a hassle. It’s a bit like having work done on your car: you might be able to do it yourself, but it’s probably easier to pay someone else to do it, and you should expect to be without your phone for a while while the repair is carried out.

Many repair shops offer same‑day repairs, provided the battery for your device is in stock. These are repair centres with a physical location near you. If you have an Apple Store nearby, they may have what you need. But in some cases you’ll have to send your phone away by post to be repaired, which could leave you without your device for several days. And even if you can get a loan phone in some places, this can still be inconvenient. On the other hand, it’s much more environmentally friendly, not to mention cheaper, to replace the battery than to buy a brand‑new phone.

Quand remplacer la batterie ?

As a rule of thumb, if you’ve had your phone for a few years and it’s starting to show its age, it’s a good time to think about a battery replacement. This is roughly the point at which you might start considering buying a new phone – many networks still push upgrades or payment plans that renew every two years – but you can also manually check your battery health to see whether you need an upgrade sooner.

On iPhones, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see a Maximum Capacity value, which shows the percentage of your battery’s original charge capacity that remains. This doesn’t tell you how full your battery is right now, but how much charge it can hold compared with when it was new. If this percentage drops to 80% (especially if it’s still under warranty), get a new battery. As usual, Android phones are a bit more complicated; there are many different models and they don’t all work the same way. You can use an app to get detailed statistics on your battery health. The app uses an estimate rather than an official report, and it can take a few days to build up a complete picture of your battery’s condition. But if it’s below 80% of its original capacity, it may be time to replace it.

Apportez votre iPhone dans un Apple Store

If you have an iPhone and want to replace the battery, you’re probably in the best position. If you’re still under warranty or have AppleCare+, you can get a free battery replacement on most phones from the last few years. If you’re no longer covered, the cost ranges from 49 to 69 euros, depending on which phone you have.

If you can take your phone into an Apple Store, they can often repair it the same day and return it to you within a few hours. If the repair is more complex, the store may need to send it to an Apple repair centre, which can take 3–5 days. However, that’s about how long it would take if you posted your phone off yourself for repair, so it makes sense to try an in‑store repair first.

For Android phones, there isn’t a single manufacturer handling all repairs as Apple does, but you can still get same‑day repairs from third‑party repair shops. Some have branches in most European countries. Some major manufacturers such as Google and Samsung even give them access to OEM parts, which means they can repair your phone with the same components these companies would use if you sent it directly to them.

Android battery repair prices can vary, but are generally around or below 100 €, though you may need to call for a quote. In some areas, the company can even send out a technician to repair your phone on site, as well as offering the usual options of visiting a shop or posting your device.

En cas d’échec, faites-le vous-même

In some situations, it may be difficult (or even impossible) to take your phone to a shop or send it away. If you’re determined to keep your phone and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can try replacing the battery yourself. A repair website offers step‑by‑step guides for replacing the battery on most major phones. These guides explain in detail which tools you need and how to take your phone apart, with photos for every stage.
