What exactly do laptop battery diagnostics apps show you?

One of the key components of any laptop is without doubt its battery. Keeping it healthy is essential if you want to make the most of the device’s main feature: its portability.

Why do you need to keep a close eye on your battery?

Over time, every battery ages, which shows up as reduced runtime or longer charging times. Although these are the most common warning signs, they can sometimes be confused with issues related to the power supply or damage to the charging connector.

Using diagnostic apps is the best way to monitor the health of your battery. These tools help you anticipate how long your battery will remain usable, based on how you use your laptop.

With these utilities, you can get precise information on:

  • The rated (design) and actual capacity of the battery pack
  • The current wear level
  • Power consumption at a given moment
  • The total number of cycles completed
  • Estimated remaining runtime
  • Internal temperature, and other data.

How can you check your battery health for free?

There are different ways to get accurate data on the condition of your battery.

Using dedicated software

Specialist programs provide far more detailed data on the state of the battery pack. They allow you to track how the battery changes over time and compare past statistics.

These applications are available as paid or free versions. The free version is usually enough to access the essential information.

Here are a few examples of these monitoring tools:

Batteryinfo

This app shows detailed information on the condition of the battery, split into two sections. The first lists the key characteristics: theoretical (rated) capacity, actual full-charge capacity, wear level, overall battery health and cycle count. The second section, the “log”, records the usage history: power source (mains or battery), charge percentage and live voltage. Every new usage session is logged.

Batterymon

BatteryMon is a real-time monitoring tool that displays battery status as a graph. This visual view lets you check how evenly the cells are charging and discharging, and how fast they do so. An irregular graph makes it easy to spot potential issues so you can react straight away.

Batterybar

Similar to BatteryInfo, BatteryBar provides data on charge level, capacities, cycles and voltage. Its interface appears as a status bar on screen, giving quick access to critical battery information. It also offers advanced options for configuring charging modes.

Battery care

This software is designed to optimise battery performance. It tracks charge and discharge cycles to help you extend your battery’s lifespan as much as possible.

It provides information on the remaining effective capacity, wear level and power consumption. A major bonus: the program also monitors the processor and hard drive temperature. This is crucial, because excessive heat damages batteries.

Using built-in operating system tools

You don’t necessarily need to install extra software to get a report on your battery health.

Windows

The method is a bit less intuitive than on macOS, but it’s very effective.

  • For Windows 8 and later: Use the PowerShell tool.
    1. Open the Start menu.
    2. Type “PowerShell” into the search box.
    3. Open the program.
    4. Type the command powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
    5. You’ll see the path where the report has been saved (usually in C:\Users[Username]).
  • For earlier versions of Windows: Use the Command Prompt (cmd).
    1. Open the Start menu.
    2. Type “cmd” into the search field.
    3. Launch the application.
    4. Type the command powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
    5. The file battery-report.html will be created in the Users/[Username] folder.

Mac os

Checking the battery is very straightforward:

  1. While holding down the Option key, click the Apple menu.
  2. Select “System Information”.
  3. In the Hardware column, click “Power”.

Understanding the report data

What key information can you get from it, and why does it matter?

Rated capacity

This value represents the maximum amount of energy the battery was originally designed to hold. It is expressed in mWh or mAh. It’s directly linked to the number of cells and how they’re connected (which explains the difference between standard and high-capacity batteries).

Maximum capacity

This is the actual amount of energy the battery can store when charged to 100%. Unlike the rated value, this capacity decreases over time and reflects the overall health of the battery. If a new battery had 4400 mAh, after a year of use it might only hold 3800 mAh.

Wear level

The more the battery pack is used, the more its effective capacity is reduced. If your battery (rated 4000 mAh) shows 5% wear, its maximum capacity is 3800 mAh. One of the main causes is performing full charge cycles, that is, discharging from 100% down to 0% and then charging back up to 100%.

Cycle count

Battery lifespan is measured in cycles, each cycle corresponding to a full charge from 0% to 100%. Most batteries have an expected life of around 500 cycles. If the figures look inaccurate, you can try calibrating the battery (fully discharge it, then fully recharge it) to get a more accurate reading.

Current capacity

This is the amount of energy currently stored in the battery at the moment you check it.

Discharge rate

This shows how much power the laptop is using, depending on the tasks you’re performing. This information is essential for estimating the average runtime you can expect under similar usage conditions.

Temperature

Excessive temperature is harmful to battery life. If you notice the laptop getting very hot while charging, you must unplug it and let it cool down.

Built-in batteries are particularly vulnerable because they run hotter and are harder to cool, and can even start to swell. If you see any sign of swelling, remove the battery immediately and plan to replace it.
